The PhD project is part of PRSONAL an interdisciplinary research project focused on risk-stratified breast cancer screening, and its economic and societal consequences.
Women aged 50-69 years are offered mammography screening every second year to detect breast cancer while it is early-stage and treatable. This one-size-fits-all screening saves lives, but also has drawbacks in terms of false positives, false negatives, and over-diagnosis. Simulation studies show that screening would produce more benefits and less harm if screening intensity was assigned according to risk.
The purpose of PRSONAL is to test this hypothesis in a trial in which consenting women undergoing mammography will be randomized to either the standard screening or to personalized screening after having their risk measured. Risk will be measured with a CE-marked risk model, including genetic analyses, questionnaires and image analyses of the mammogram. Project is explained in more detail on https://prsonal.dk/ and https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT06060938?term=PRSONAL&checkSpell=false&rank=1 .
By providing comprehensive information on breast cancer, personal risk and recommended screening with a web-based Risk Communication Tool, PRSONAL will herald a new, personalized era in the management of frequent diseases. Apart from clinical outcomes, the introduction of risk-stratified breast cancer screening is likely to influence the cost of screening, as well as impact healthcare resource utilisation and, possibly, the quality of life of women undergoing screening. Given the limited resources within which health systems operate, it is important to consider how efficiently we use healthcare resources.
The project aims to evaluate several health economic aspects of PRSONAL. It will compare the changes in quality of life in the control and interventions groups, explore the changes in healthcare utilisation patterns (and associated costs), and estimate the cost-effectiveness of the PRSONAL intervention compared to the current screening programme. The PhD position is for three years, starting in September 2025. As a PhD student, you will plan, lead, and execute the project in collaboration with your supervisors, contribute to the overall project development, and participate in teaching activities at the Department of Public Health. You will also be given the opportunity to participate in the bi-weekly research meetings at the department of Clinical Biochemistry, Herlev Gentofte Hospital, where you will learn to hold research impactful talks in English. The ideal candidate is quantitatively focused, strives for the best level of scientific work, can work independently, persistently, and in a structured manner. We also value social skills and a friendly and helpful attitude towards others.Qualifications
