Job description: Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has an exciting opportunities available for Fisheries Assistant Eels/Habitat project which would be well suited to those who have an interest in protecting, managing and conserving Ireland’s inland fisheries and sea angling resources.Inland Fisheries Ireland carries out applied fisheries research to assess the conservation status of Ireland’s fish species, to monitor fisheries stocks in inland and coastal waters and to explore environmental issues that have an impact on fish and their habitats.The role of the Seasonal Fisheries Assistant mainly involves assisting the Senior Research Officers and their teams in the collection, ordering and analysis of relevant biological and physical data in the aquatic environment.Fisheries Assistant Eels/Habitat is also involved in assisting with data entry and preliminary analysis of biological and physical data such as preparing charts, graphs, and figures for further analysis.There will be an element of travelling across Ireland for parts of the contract and conducting field work in all weather conditions. Field work will be influenced by weather; consequently, the position will require flexibility regarding working hours, particularly during the summer months. EG prepare graphs and summaries, perform computations in numerical summaries and cross references facts, dates and other data.Maintain raw data and all other records in a clear concise format.Compile and maintain all records in a manner compatible with GIS and use GIS to prepare mapping outputs.Assist the Senior Research Officer in ensuring that other elements of the programme, not specifically linked to data collection and analysis, are achieved in a timely and efficient manner.Provide any technical support necessary for timely delivery of the appropriate programme.Liaise with other IFI staff working on related projects as required.Undertake all other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the Senior Research Officer or nominee.We expect to hold interviews for this role around 8th of August 2025.KEY EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONSEssentialLeaving Certificate (Level 5 NFQ) or recognised equivalent with minimum Grade Con at least two Higher level papers, to include; one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics,Geography or Maths.A full Category B driving licence that is valid in Ireland.Eligible to work in the State.Ability to work as part of a team.Can meet the travel requirements of the post and is prepared to work outside of normal hours as necessary.Familiarity with working outdoors in all weather conditions.DesirableA relevant degree or equivalent (Minimum Level 7 NFQ)A full Category BE driving licence that is valid in IrelandPrevious relevant experience.Familiarity working in water and in small boats.Familiarity with electric fishing/netting for fish.Experience of using statistical packages.Experience using GPS and GIS software.Knowledge of fisheries.KEY PERSONAL ATTRIBUTESAbility to form effective working relationships with team members, members of the public and IFI’s external stakeholders.Excellent communication skills.Flexible approach to work and hours.Commitment to the job and demonstrates self-motivation.Good timekeeping.Excellent, oral, written & numeracy skills.Demonstrated ability in use of computer software.Experienced in report writing.Honest & trustworthy.Good command of the English language.Acts with Dignity & Integrity at all times.Customer service skills.GARDA VETTINGPlease note that the successful candidate will need to go through a Garda Vetting process and complete safeguarding training before they can take up their role.By applying for this role, you give Inland Fisheries Ireland permission to process your personal information through the National Vetting Bureau and if any disclosure of information which comes to light is deemed to put children and vulnerable adults at risk, you may not be able to take up the role.REMUNERATION
The salary scale for the position is at the level of Fisheries Assistant as applies in Inland Fisheries Ireland. New entrants to the public sector are required to commence employment on Point 1 (€31,979).Candidates should note that salary will not be subject to negotiation and the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy.
