Job description: Offer DescriptionWe are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join the Doctoral Network (DN) “WATER”, which aims to train 16 early-stage researchers to unravel the multiple roles of interfacial water in biological membranes. The position will be funded under the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).HostInstitutionJohannes Kepler University Linz (JKU), Austria, Institute of Biophysics (Head: Prof. Peter Pohl)Research Focus –
- Investigate the role of intraluminal water molecules in the energetics of protein insertion from the translocation channel into the membrane, and assess water mobility in the activated translocon
- Techniques: stopped-flow kinetics, fluorometric/colorimetric assays, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, micropipette aspiration, patch-clamp recordings of giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs)

Prague: Spectroscopic analysis of probe mobility within transportersFinancial Package
- Full-time (40 h/week), 3-year position
- Approx. €50,000/year gross salary + Mobility allowance: €7200/year
Estimated net income: €2,800/month (paid in 14 installments)Start Date1 September 2025Eligibility Criteria
- No prior doctoral degree
- Must not have resided in Austria
12 months in the past 3 years * MSc (or near completion) in (Bio)Physics, (Bio)Chemistry or related fieldsStrong command of EnglishDesirable Quali-fications
- Experience with light microscopy, FCS, or electrophysiology
- Background in protein expression/purification, model membranes (planar bilayers, GUVs)
- Site-directed mutagenesis, protein overexpression
- Familiarity with scientific programming for data analysis
