PhD Positions in Heterogenous Catalysis: Ammonia Synthesis

Job title: PhD Positions in Heterogenous Catalysis: Ammonia Synthesis

Company:

Job description: Offer DescriptionThe SURFCE Group at the University of Limerick, led by Professor Bar Mosevitzky Lis, is recruiting motivated PhD candidates for a fully funded ‘Research Ireland’ project studying the ability to design interactions between supporting and active materials to enhance the ability of heterogenous catalysts to synthesise ammonia. The PhD students will work collaboratively with other member of the group, as well as collaborators in Ireland and the USA.Mass production of ammonia via the Haber-Bosch process is vital due to its role in fertiliser synthesis, thereby enhancing crop yields and food availability. In fact, half of the calories produced today would not exist if not for ammonia. Moreover, ammonia is now used for renewable energy storage, a role that is expected to increase in importance in the coming decades. However, its production is fossil energy-intensive, leading to ~2% of all GHG emissions. Consequently, improving efficiency and reducing cost for catalytic ammonia synthesis can transform the world we live in by alleviating world hunger and mitigating global warming.Successful applicants will employ advanced methods and an array of chemical, physical and kinetic techniques to synthesise, characterise and test novel heterogenous catalytic materials at the University of Limerick, while collaborating with other groups in Ireland and the USA on experimental and computational catalytic work. Pending visa status, successful applicants will be seconded for short periods at collaborator labs in the USA where they’ll gain experimental experience and network with the US catalysis community. Successful applicants will be expected to present their work in national and international conferences and symposiums.Potential applicants are expected to have the following attributes:

  • Self drive and motivation.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Fluent communication skills in English (oral and written).
  • A background in Chemistry / Chemical Engineering / Materials Engineering / or similar.

Applications should be sent by email to and include: (1) a cover letter and (2) a CV. The CV must include information on the applicant’s educational background, scientific publications and presentations, and any relevant research/work/volunteering activities.Additional information about the University of Limerick, the Department of Chemical Sciences and the Bernal Institute can be found below:The University of Limerick (UL) is located in the Wild Atlantic Gateway city of Limerick on the west coast of Ireland. With over 18000 students, including more than 3,300 internationally mobile students each year, UL is an independent research-led university offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Education and Health Sciences, Science and Engineering and the Kemmy Business School.
