Job description: Offer DescriptionA Post-Doctoral Researcher post (6 months) in database (corpus platform) is available at the Department of Music in the School of Film, Music and Theatre at University College Cork. The position is funded by the European Research Council and is associated with the research project ECura. The researcher will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Dr Lijuan Qian as part of a small team of community-engaged ethnomusicological researchers.The Position will focus on technical development for music and corpus deposit of several ethnic minority communities, including:

  • Maintaining and optimizing the VM hosting a bilingual (English/Chinese) corpus and website, including a customized content management system.
  • Developing mobile applications (WeChat, Android, iOS) for searching and interacting with cultural heritage data.
  • Building machine learning models for word-based recognition and processing of Yunnan ethnic minority languages.

The researcher will work closely with the Principal Investigator, ECura team members, community leaders, and an international advisory group, ensuring that digital tools align with cultural preservation goals.In the Application Letter, candidates are expected to outline how their interests and skills align with the ECura project – namely, programming skills in website development and maintenance, mobile end development, natural language processing, language capacities, writing skills and the ability to work and think independently.In the evaluation of the applications, emphasis will be placed on:

  • PhD degree (awarded) in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics or other closely related areas;
  • Technical skills in Server/VM management (Linux, cloud services, security);
  • Proficiency in Mobile app development (WeChat Mini programs, Android/iOS, or cross-platform frameworks).
  • Technical skills in machine learning/natural language processing
  • The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to carry out the project within the allotted time frame
  • Fluency in both spoken and written English and Mandarin
  • Evidence of excellent organisational and co-operative skills, and the ability to sustain academic collaboration within and across disciplines

Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI’s. This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher. The researcher will be mentored by a Principal Investigator (PI). It is expected that a researcher would spend not more than 3 years at the Post Doctoral level, subject to the term of the project and would then be eligible to compete for a Senior Post Doctoral post advertised by the University.Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI’s.   • To conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator/Project Leader.
  • To develop and manage the ECura database (Corpus platform) ‘Multilingual Parallel Corpus of Yunnan Ethnic Minority Music’ under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator/Project Leader.
  • To maintain and optimize the VW hosting a VM hosting (bilingual English/Chinese) corpus and website.
  • To develop mobile applications (WeChat, Android, iOS) for searching and interacting with traditional music related dataset.
  • Explore the possibility of machine learning models for word-based recognition and procession of Yunnan ethnic minority languages.
  • To work collaboratively with the project’s research team, as well as community leaders and members.
  • To comply with UCC’s codes of practice, with the General Data Protection Regulations, the relevant Irish and Chinese legislation, and the ethics standards envisioned in the Horizon Europe frameworks.
  • To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, School or College in order to develop research skills and competencies.
  • To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged, as directed by, with the support of and under the supervision of a Principal Investigator.
  • To gain experience in grant writing.
  • To become familiar with the publication process.
  • To acquire generic and transferable skills (including project management, business skills and postgraduate mentoring/supervision).
  • To engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the research group, School or College.
  • To carry out administrative work to support the programme of research.
  • To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day-to-day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor.
  • To carry out additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
  • To contribute to costing research grant proposals and assist in the financial management of a research project.

Specific Requirements

  • PhD degree (awarded) in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics or other closely related areas.
  • Appropriate research experience.
  • Appropriate technical competence and accomplishment.
  • Strong skills in written and spoken English and Chinese.
  • Strong ability to learn the updated apps in related areas.
  • Skill and knowledge in recording and organising audio and video materials for database and online use.
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position.
  • The capacity to work independently as well as with a team.
  • A strong ability at learning new concepts, methods, and approaches relevant to the area of the project.
  • A capability of working within a project team to achieve results.
  • Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
