The position is funded by the European Research Council and is associated with the research project ECura. The researcher will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Dr Lijuan Qian as part of a small team of community-engaged ethnomusicological researchers. Collaboration with local communities leaders and activists will be essential, and mentoring will be provided by an advisory group consisting of senior academic advisers inside China and worldwide.ECura focuses on three ethnic minority communities (Yi, Bai and Miao) in Yunnan, SW China. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will carry out fieldwork among these population and keep in person or virtual communication with the community leaders of collaborative villages. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will also require maintaining project website ( ) and database, working on the existing project database and contributing new data entries and content, along with other team members.In the Application Letter, candidates are expected to outline how their interests and skills align with the ECura project – namely, previous community-engaged activity, familiarity with ethnic minority societies in SW China, language capacities, writing skills, website management experience and the ability to work and think independently.The successful candidate will be expected to live in Cork, Ireland and become an active part of the research environment/network of the university more widely.In the evaluation of the applications, emphasis will be placed on:

  • PhD degree (awarded) in ethnomusicology, folklore or other closely related areas;
  • The applicant’s knowledge of and record of active and ethical engagement with ethnic minority populations in SW China;
  • Language capacities in English, Chinese, and ideally, familiarity to local accents of Yunnan populations.
  • Evidence of excellent organisational and co-operative skills, and the ability to sustain academic collaboration within and across disciplines

Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI’s. This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher. Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEI

  • To conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator/Project Leader.
  • To conduct community-engaged fieldwork in Bai, Miao and Yi villages in SW China.
  • To keep frequent communication with community collaborators through social media platforms.
  • To work collaboratively with the project’s advisory board, data and website technicians, as well as community leaders and members.
  • To comply with UCC’s codes of practice, with the General Data Protection Regulations, the relevant Irish and Chinese legislation, and the ethics standards envisioned in the Horizon Europe frameworks.
  • To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, School or College in order to develop research skills and competencies.
  • To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged, as directed by, with the support of and under the supervision of a Principal Investigator.
  • To acquire generic and transferable skills (including project management, grant writing, business skills and postgraduate mentoring/supervision).
  • To engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the research group, School or College.
  • To carry out administrative work to support the programme of research.
  • To gain experience in grant writing.
  • To become familiar with the publication process.
  • To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day to day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor.
  • To contribute to costing research grant proposals and assist in the financial management of a research project.
  • To carry out additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Specific RequirementsThe successful candidate will be expected to have:Essential Criteria

  • PhD degree (awarded) in ethnomusicology, folklore or another closely related area with demonstrable experience in community-engaged fieldwork or community outreach.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Appropriate research experience.
  • Appropriate technical competence and accomplishment.
  • Strong skills in written and spoken English and Chinese.
  • Skill and knowledge in recording and organising audio and video materials for database and online use.
  • Strong ability to process, edit and store the data produced by project.
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position.
  • The capacity to work independently as well as with a team.
  • A strong ability at learning new concepts, methods, and approaches relevant to the area of the project.
  • A capability of working within a project team to achieve results.
  • Good organisation and interpersonal skills.
  • A commitment to gaining practical experience working on a research project.
  • Ability to work well within a team.
