This position is highly interdisciplinary as it supports the advancement of data visualisation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence domains. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will be expected to perform research and development in these areas, within an established group of researchers, PhD students, MSc students and undergraduate final year students. Two applications will be at the core of the work: soundscape ecology of underwater recordings, and document analysis.The nature and structure of the Phase 2 Research Ireland Centre programme allows for Post-Doctoral Researchers to work and gain valuable experience in a varied & research-rich environment where you may gain experience, where applicable, working on projects with SME’s, MNC’s, H2020 projects as well as basic platform research within the Insight Centre for Data Analytics programme.The successful candidate will be based in the Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics at the University College Cork. The candidate will be supported in their professional development, be able to avail of a range of career-level focused training opportunities and have the potential to publish research findings in leading journals and international events.Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI’s. This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher. Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEIProject Title: UCAI ApplicationsPost Duration: 11 MonthsWhere to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Computer science » Other Education Level Master Degree or equivalentSkills/QualificationsThe primary focus of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be research however a particular emphasis during this stage should include;

  • To conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator/Project Leader.
  • To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, School or College in order to develop research skills and competencies.
  • To gain experience in grant writing.
  • To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged, as directed by, with the support of and under the supervision of a Principal Investigator.
  • To become familiar with the publication process.
  • To acquire generic and transferable skills (including project management, business skills and postgraduate mentoring/supervision).
  • To engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the research group, School or College.
  • To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day-to-day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor.
  • To carry out administrative work to support the programme of research.
  • To carry out additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
  • To contribute to costing research grant proposals and assist in the financial management of a research project.
  • To provide academic outputs results to Centre admin reps for reporting requirements to Centre Operations Staff, Research Ireland, H2020 or other funder requirements. To use selected platforms as needed for collection and collation of associated metrics.
  • To travel internationally if required by project needs.
  • To work with industry partners and academic collaborators where needed.
  • To become responsible and competent in related research data management and data protection policies and protocols.
  • Engage in and/or create opportunities in the area of Education and Public Engagement where applicable and appropriate for your project and report outputs as required.

Specific RequirementsThe successful candidate will be expected to have:Essential Criteria

  • A PhD qualification. Computer Science or related discipline.
  • Research experience in data visualization, machine learning, and artificial intelligence
  • Appropriate technical competence and accomplishment.
  • A capability of working within a project team to achieve results.
  • Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
  • A commitment to gaining practical experience working on a research project.
  • Ability to work well within a team.
  • Experience writing grants is desirable but not required.
