Job title: Postdoc in high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells – DTU Energy

Company: Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

Job description: Job Category: VIP BJob Description:The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Energy) invites applications for a 20 month experimental postdoc position to work on materials and test of high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. The position is part of a national project in close collaboration with industry aiming at further reduction of cost and enhancement of durability and production reliability.Responsibilities and qualifications
The main focus of the postdoc work is development and characterization novel materials including catalysts and polymer membranes for high temperature polymer fuel cells. You will work closely with colleagues from DTU Energy, Danish industrial and international partners within a polymer fuel cell project. The project targets include lifting lower TRL material production (catalyst synthesis and membrane fabrication, developing medium TRL MEA manufacturing (structures and methods), and providing high TRL reference MEAs in industrial stacks and test capacity for validation of the materials/components in operational environment.Main duties of the position include:

  • Fabrication of gas diffusion electrodes by hot spraying techniques from catalysts of varied metal alloys and carbon supports
  • Membrane preparation of organic-inorganic composites with varied thicknesses
  • Manufacturing lab scale MEAs
  • Assembling and test of single cells with protocols focusing on electrode and membrane performance
  • Evaluation of MEA durability with protocols focusing on electrode and membrane degradation
  • Maintaining test rigs for single cell performance and durability test
  • Conducting postmortem analysis of cell components (XRD, TGA&DSC, SEM, TEM) etc.
  • Dissemination of the research results

Candidates should have a PhD degree in experimental research of materials (catalysts & membranes), component processing and fabrication, electrochemistry, and fuel cell test and evaluation. The core skills for the project are:

  • Experience in materials synthesis and fabrication of polymer fuel cell components
  • Experience in assembly and electrochemical characterization of MEAs
  • Experience in establishing protocols and maintaining facilities for fuel cell test
  • Experience in structural (e.g. XRD, SEM, and TEM) and elemental (titration and ICP)
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for progress and quality of projects
  • Ability to work in a team environment

Moreover, the successful candidate is:

  • Highly motivated and enthusiastic about the research topics
  • Able to work in a well-organized fashion and document and disseminate results
  • Able to work with diverse colleagues with both theoretical and engineering backgrounds

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). We offer
