You will join the Biomimetics, Biocarriers and Bioimplants group (The 3Bs), led by Associate Professor Leticia Hosta-Rigau at DTU Health Tech. The group works across materials science, organic/polymer chemistry, and molecular and cell biology. Our focus areas include drug delivery, cell mimicry, and tissue engineering. Blood transfusions save lives-but donor blood is limited, perishable, and not always available in emergencies. Synthetic oxygen carriers can change that.This project focuses on developing hemoglobin-based nanoparticles as red blood cell substitutes. These systems promise universal compatibility, long shelf life, and safe oxygen delivery-without relying on human donors.You’ll build on the 3Bs group’s extensive data and recent publications to evaluate the biological performance of these nanocarriers in preclinical models.Recent publications: Biomater. You’ll take the lead on:

  • Designing and conducting in vitro biosafety experiments: cell viability, hemocompatibility, complement activation
  • Performing in vivo biodistribution and clearance studies in mice
  • Monitoring biochemical markers and evaluating organ histology
  • Testing oxygen transport using a hemorrhagic shock rat model
  • Analyzing and communicating your findings through publications and presentations
  • Co-supervising MSc and PhD students

Candidate profile
Required qualifications:

  • PhD in Biology, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, or Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Valid FELASA certification
  • Strong experience with murine models (mice and/or rats)
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)
  • High level of independence, motivation, and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research

Preferred experience:

  • Hands-on expertise in flow cytometry, ELISA, coagulation and hemolysis assays, cell culture
  • Background in drug delivery or nanomedicine
  • Excellent scientific writing and a strong publication record
  • Experience co-supervising students
