Job description: Offer DescriptionThe Department of Ecosystem Management, Climate and Biodiversity, Institute of Botany is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate.Extent of employment: 40 hours per week
Duration of employment: 1st of October 2025, limited to 30th of September 2031
Workplace: 1180 Vienna
Allocation in compliance with the Collective Agreement for University Staff to job group: B1 lit. b
Gross monthly salary: (depending on previous eligible experience) at least: € 4.932,90
(payable 14 times per year)Responsibilities
- Research in the field of vegetation ecology (and/or botany, plant ecology, population biology, conservation biology, evolutionary ecology, biodiversity) with a central focus on experimental research into the effects of global change (e.g. plant invasions, climate change) on plant diversity. Potential research areas include: 1) plant invasions, with a focus on biotic interactions between alien plants (neophytes) and other plants, pollinators, herbivores or soil organisms, and how the impacts of plant invasions change over time; 2) climate change, with a focus on effects of climate change (especially extreme events and synergistic effects of multiple factors) on alien plants and on biotic interactions; and 3) biodiversity in agricultural landscapes, with a focus on effects of arable land management on arable plants based on their functional traits.
Research activities should fit with the research interests of the future University Professor Dr. Christine Sheppard (for a more detailed description see ), although there is freedom to develop an independent research profile in this position * Assistance in the planning and setting up of the experimental infrastructure for research into plant invasions, climate change effects and biotic interactions using “common garden experiments” at the Groß-Enzersdorf Experimental Farm
- Teaching courses (lectures, exercises and excursions) in vegetation ecology and related topics as part of various BSc and MSc programmes (4 SWS per semester)
- Supervision of Master’s students and co-supervision of doctoral students
- Acquisition and leading of third-party funded research
projects * Publication of research results in relevant scientific journals
- Involvement in the organization of the Botany and Vegetation Ecology research group and potentially in academic selfgovernance
Required skills and qualifications
- Doctorate degree / PhD in Ecology, Botany or similar
- Very good written and spoken English, knowledge of German is an advantage, particularly for teaching
- Keen interest in scientific research and teaching in botany, ecology and biodiversity
- Experience with experimental plant or vegetation ecology research
- Experience with analyzing ecological data (preferably in R)
- Experience with scientific publishing
- Independence and ability to work in a team
- Organizational skills and reliability
Desirable skills and qualifications
- Good knowledge of Central European plant species and vegetation types
- Basic experience in academic teaching
