Postdoctoral Research Position in Biomicrofluidics (m/f/d)

Company:

Job description: Offer DescriptionThe Molecular Biophysics Group, led by Dr. Georg Krainer at the Institute of Molecular Biosciences (IMB), is seeking a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Researcher with a strong background in microfluidics to join our interdisciplinary research group at the University of Graz, Austria.About the PositionThis postdoctoral position offers the opportunity to drive forward research at the interface of microfluidics and molecular biosciences. A main focus will be on the design, development, and application of microfluidic systems for cutting-edge use in life sciences and biomedical research. Your responsibilities will include advancing single-molecule microfluidic assays, high-throughput biochemical screening methods, and microfluidic diagnostic assays to enable new approaches and discoveries in basic and applied biosciences. The role includes both independent and collaborative research and provides the opportunity to develop and advance a distinct research profile in the field of biomicrofluidics. You will work closely with Bachelor’s, Masters’ and PhD students, interdisciplinary collaborators, and institutional partners, contributing to both the conceptual design and technical realization of novel microfluidic methods and assays.Additional responsibilities include acquiring third-party funding, publishing in international journals, presenting at conferences, developing and teaching courses in Bachelor’s and Master’s programs, supervising students, supporting administrative tasks, and actively participating in university governance and the organizational activities of the institute. The position offers the possibility of pursuing a habilitation.Key RequirementsApplicants should hold a PhD in (Bio-)Physics, (Bio-)Chemistry, (Bio-)Engineering, or a related field, and demonstrate strong expertise in microfluidics. Solid practical skills are essential, particularly hands-on experience with continuous-flow and droplet-based microfluidic systems, as well as with design and chip fabrication techniques such as soft lithography. Additional experience with optical integration, advanced fluorescence microscopy (including single-molecule techniques), or automated assay development will be considered a strong asset.Applicants should demonstrate a research-driven mindset and a strong interest in working at the interface of physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering. They should be capable of independently designing and executing experiments, analyzing data, and communicating findings effectively. Strong programming and data analysis skills (e.g., Python) are highly desirable. A strong academic track record, including first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals, excellent English language skills, and a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach are required. Experience in teaching, in the conception and implementation of research projects, and in working within international and interdisciplinary teams are highly desirable. What We OfferWe offer a six-year Postdoc position (University Assistant with Doctorate; initial one-year contract with the possibility of extension for up to five additional years) under a fixed-term, full-time contract (100% FTE, approx. 69,000 € gross/year) in accordance with Austrian academic standards, including paid annual leave. An overpayment based on qualification and experience eligible for inclusion is possible. The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art microfluidics, microscopy, and single-molecule fluorescence instrumentation, all within a dynamic and collaborative research environment at the Institute of Molecular Biosciences (IMB). The position also provides opportunities for career development, international collaborations, and participation in conferences to present research findings. How to ApplyApplications should be submitted via the University of Graz job portal using the following link: ;Interested candidates are asked to submit the following documents:1. A cover letter outlining your current research interests, relevant expertise, and motivation for joining the group, including an outline of your future research interests2. A detailed CV, including relevant research and teaching experience3. A list of publications4. Contact information for 2-3 academic references5. A summary of research achievements (max. 2 pages)Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. For any further question, please enquire with Dr. Georg Krainer – (Website Molecular Biophysics). We are committed to fostering diversity and inclusion and encourage applications from all qualified individuals, regardless of gender, nationality, or background. We also welcome applications from motivated and talented candidates confident in their ability to excel, even if they do not meet every criterion.Starting Date 1st October 2025 or upon mutual agreement.Additional InformationThe University of Graz, one of Austria’s largest academic institutions, is committed to excellence in research and teaching.
