Starting as soon as possible, and ending after 3 yearsThe newly founded WU Competence Center for Applied AI and Scientific Computing at the Vienna University of Economics and Business is a cross-disciplinary institution, with a founding team of researchers from the Departments of Information Systems and Operations Management; Finance, Accounting and Statistics; and Marketing. It aims to create a space at WU where AI researchers and practitioners come together to create innovative AI solutions, transfer research insights to practical applications and evaluate AI applications. The new Competence Center will work closely with academic and service units at WU to establish the necessary infrastructure and procedures for productive AI application in research, teaching, and administration. The Competence Center will also organize courses, workshops and consultations on AI projects. After 3 years, the Competence Center will be evaluated. Depending on the outcome of the evaluation, extending the contract may be possible.What to expectWe are looking for a self-motivated, highly organized and productive person, who will take the operational lead in building the Competence Center with us. In terms of own research activities, we particularly welcome ideas how to apply and extend own research to address challenges in AI applications as encountered in the context of the Competence Center. Your operational, consulting and administrative tasks will include

  • working together with WU departments to identify the AI-related needs and resources of WU personnel in academic and service units and supporting them in implementing use cases
  • establishing and maintaining technical Competence Center infrastructure together with a team of Research Operations Assistants
  • establishing and maintaining the Competence Center as an information hub for internal and external AI-related research and activities
  • developing procedures and rules for AI and infrastructure usage in research projects
  • organizational support for running AI projects
  • organizing and conducting courses, workshops and consultations with a team of Research Assistants
  • collaborating on AI-related research projects and grant proposals
  • administrative support for the director of the Competence Center.

There are no teaching obligations. Supervision of Bachelor and co-supervision of Master theses is welcome.What you have to offerWe wish to attract candidates with

  • a solid academic qualification (PhD or equivalent) in Business, Economics, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
  • ample experience in AI research, ideally with a strong focus on applications for business and economics
  • IT background and skills necessary to establish and manage AI infrastructure together with a team of Research Assistants
  • evidence of research quality (in terms of publications and projects)
  • ideally, experience in setting up or managing institutions like competence centers, laboratories, shared research groups
  • ideally, experience with managing and organizing requirements from diverse stakeholders, such as researchers, lecturers, administrative personnel, regulatory and legal, IT services
  • ideally, experience with successfully applying for and managing research grants

A very good written and oral command of the English language is required. Fluent German is a big plus.
