Job description: Job DescriptionDuration:Temporary externally funded non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 11 months, subject to contract. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.Basic FunctionThe successful candidate will be involved in the extraction and fractionation of high value ingredients and recovery of nutrients from fish and marine by-products. The candidate will also assist other partners/researchers in the development of bespoke bio refinery and extraction processes for the valorisation of fish and marine by-products, and assist in the upscale selected processes. The primary role of the candidate is to support the development of a range of extraction technologies and to develop valorisation strategies. Key role of the successful technician will be the following:

  • To aid in the development of clean and green extraction/bioprocessing technologies for recovery of nutrients/high value ingredients.
  • To process side streams and extract ingredients for potential agri-food applications.

BackgroundThe role is based in the Food Industry Development Department at the Teagasc Food Research Centre, Ashtown, Dublin 15, which houses the National Prepared Consumer Food Centre. The Centre has state of the art pilot processing facilities and equipment and the appointed person will support the project and the expanding industry support/research and development programme being offered in this area. A key aspect of the role will be working with a food industry client to deliver on their specific product and process requirements.The focus of this project is to investigate and develop pilot scale manufacturing processes for the extraction of valuable compounds from fish and marine by-products, which are leading to current waste streams. The project will involve the application of conventional and novel extraction techniques leading to the development of proteins and bio actives that will be characterised, fully tested from a functional perspective and meet the required EU food regulatory specifications.Job Objectives

  • To conduct extraction and fractionation experiments from fish and marine side streams with a specific focus on the development of bioprocesses for valorisation of side steams and development of value end ingredients for food and feed applications
  • To assist in the experimental execution of the project work packages and identify and source the necessary resources and equipment required for the work programme
  • To assist in the design of experiments and characterisation of the obtained products in terms of nutritional value, bioactivity and techno-functional properties for product applications
  • Development of SOPs and risk assessment for equipment and processes.
  • Validating concepts and products at pilot scale and transferring to an industrial application.
  • Sourcing of equipment, ingredients and packaging materials for product, process and packaging trials.
  • Health & Safety Co-ordinator Duties or such other Health & Safety Duties as may be assigned from time to time.
  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.
  • To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.

Skills RequirementEssentialDesirableQualifications

  • A Level 6 qualification, (as recognised on the

or ), in Food Science/Engineering/Bioprocessing or other relevant discipline.

  • A Level 7 qualification in Bioprocessing would be a distinct advantage
  • Relevant experience industry or other appropriate field

Skills

  • Excellent laboratory skills, organization skills, report writing and data analysis
  • Data handling and computer skills.
  • Sample collection and pilot plant work.
  • Familiarity with field work for bioprocessing research and monitoring
  • Experience in operating pilot plant & food processing equipment.
  • Analytical experience (food testing).
  • Aptitude for multidisciplinary approaches.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Irish agri-food landscape
  • Knowledge of analysis of agri-food by-products
  • Knowledge of instrument calibration and validation.
  • Technical competency in laboratory and pilot plant equipment.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft office products.
  • Laboratory and pilot plant quality
  • Knowledge of the chemistry, microbiology, physical and sensory characteristics of foods.
  • Knowledge of Fish processing
  • Knowledge of agri-food by-product valorisation
